Guidelines for Reading Response #2: Penny Wolfson's Moonrise

PART I: 

• Why is Penny Wolfson telling this story? Or to say that in a few different ways: why does Wolfson need to tell this story? What's so urgent about telling this story for Wolfson?
• Why is Penny Wolfson's story important or relevant?

PART II:

• How is Penny Wolfson's essay personally relevant to you?

• How does this reading affect the way you think of yourself or your past? 
• Of yourself as future doctor?
• Or as a patient?
• As the friend or family member of a patient?
• How does it affect the way you think about medicine or the doctor profession?  

The autobiographical questions in Part II are encouraging you to respond personally, not objectively or neutrally, to the issues raised by the reading. Feel free to write a narrative response. Feel free to tell me a story.

PART III:

• What do you admire most about the way the essay was made? (A striking image, an artful characterization, a passage of dialogue, the way the plot was revealed or withheld, etc)

Reading responses must be organized according to the three parts above. Be specific: use quotes and citations to support your claims.  Reading Responses should be 2-3 pages, double-spaced, typed.

Reading Responses will receive a letter grade based on three essential principles: responses must be (1) clear, (2) complete and (3) complex.    Note:  I have no patience for responses which basically say that the reading was lousy and there wasn't anything in it for you.  Your task is to be receptive and teachable, open and inquisitive.
